Public Health Warning: Stop Using Niacin For High Cholesterol or Triglycerides Until You Know The Whole Story About It’s Effectiveness, Safety, Side Effects, & Risks…”
|
| Niacin and cholesterol are closely linked, and Vitamin B3 is recommended by some experts to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels within your body. Because of its ability to break down fats it is essential for heart attack prevention, as well as treating diabetes and cataracts. |
Some cardiologists prescribe 3 grams of niacin per day or even higher amounts for people with very high cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, at this effective level, Niacin has many negative side-effects (see next question below).
NOTE: Many studies show that for 67% of people, even 3,000 mgs (or more) of daily Niacin still doesn’t help lower cholesterol. Additionally, the other form of Vitamin B3, “niacinamide” does NOT work at all.
Q: Does Niacin Have Any Negative Side-Effects?
When used at lower dosages for regular health functions, such as those found in a regular daily multi-vitamin (20 mgs daily is 100% of RDA), Niacin is very safe. And, that’s all that’s needed for normal function. BUT, for the cholesterol reduction dosage, a MUCH HIGHER (and potentially dangerous) dose of OVER 3,000 mgs is needed. That’s 150,000% higher than the daily recommended dosage.
At such intakes, acute (flushing, headache, stomachache) and chronic (liver damage, diabetes, gastritis, eye damage, and possibly gout) toxicity can occur. Many people are not able to continue taking these levels of niacin due to discomfort or danger to their health.
Therefore, IF you choose to take such high intakes of niacin, then it must only be done under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional or your medical doctor. In fact, there is a prescription formula dosage under the name of Niaspan – which again, is only prescribed through your medical doctor.
Q: How Do I know If Niacin Will Work For Me?
Actually, you don’t. As stated above, for 67% of people who use even the super high, toxic dosages don’t see any improvement in their cholesterol levels. BUT, many people try it anyway and risk toxicity and long-term negative side-effects because Niacin is “cheap” and you can pick it up at your local vitamin store. In fact, the problem with using only ONE ingredient (niacin or anything else) to try and get the job done, almost always leads to negative side-effects. The problem is if you use too low a dose, nothing happens and you are wasting your time and money. BUT, if you increase the dose to finally see positive effects, you’ll also have to deal with negative side-effects – that’s the problem of “mega dosing”.
You see, the body craves “balance”. When you use an effective and hence, “high” dosage of any ONE ingredient – your body becomes toxic, overloaded, fights back and creates negative side-effects because it’s trying to (A) detox the body and (B) get back to “balance” (also known as “homeostasis”).
Q: Is Niacin The ONLY Ingredient I Need To Use To Lower Cholesterol & Triglycerides?
Personally, I would NEVER recommend anyone using Niacin for cholesterol reduction. Use what is found in a regular multi-vitamin (20 mgs daily) for health reasons. But, using the highly toxic dosage of 3,000 mgs will lead to problems and for most people, it doesn’t even work.
In fact, no single ingredient works at 100% effectiveness forever, let alone for every person. And that includes Niacin or any other single herb or nutrient.
Think about it. Just like you don’t eat only broccoli for best health, you don’t want to use only one herb or nutrient either.
Research has shown that there are about a dozen CLINCALLY PROVEN and NATURAL ingredients that dramatically improve cholesterol levels, far better and safer than niacin. Other key ingredients you should look for when purchasing a product to Lower Cholesterol & Triglycerides, are:
- Red Rice Yeast (make sure it’s 10:1 Extract – with citrinin removed)
- Sytrinol®
- Co-Q10
- Garlic Extract (make sure it’s Deodorized with 1.3% alliin)

- Guggulsterones (make sure it’s 10% Pure Extract; E and Z)

Additionally, whatever product you select - make sure it has a liver cleansing formula (because that’s where cholesterol problems first start) and something to reduce Homocysteine levels (which is 43% cause of heart attacks). This is REALLY IMPORTANT!
